The Pirate Maestro: The Music Of Hans Zimmer featurette.Masters Of Design - Creating the Pirates' World (5 featurettes).Anatomy Of A Scene: The Maelstrom featurette.2 deleted Scenes with optional commentary by director Gore Verbinski. But even though it's far from watertight, there's enough scoop to keep the fans buoyed. Surprisingly the bonus disc doesn't offer much in the way of b-roll footage and there's little contribution from co-stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. And for those who still haven't figured out what the heck is going on, there's an interactive feature which attempts to explain how all the pieces of the story fit together. (We don't blame him.) A short profile of Chow Yun Fat and his high-kicking turn as Captain Sao Feng is thrown in too. Verbinski provides optional commentary for this, but simply can't be bothered for the main feature. Another featurette takes a closer look at the writing of the song Hoist The Colours, which accompanies a very dark scene involving the hanging of a little boy.Ī blooper reel cheers things up a bit and in one of two deleted scenes Depp and Geoffrey Rush perform some vaudevillian shtick as they fight over the ship's wheel. Renowned composer Hans Zimmer, aka The Pirate Maestro, talks about working closely with the editors to develop his score for the film and sees him at work with the orchestra. Creature designer Crash McCreery reveals his initial sketches and admits, "The jellyfish-head guy didn't work." A batch of five featurettes showcase the costumes, the props and various sea beasties. When it comes to the little details, credit goes to the design team. In the meantime the extras are trained for battle, then lots of water is added before the whole lot is garnished with more CGI. The biggest challenge faced by the crew was staging The Maelstrom - producer Jerry Bruckheimer boasts that "It's the biggest action sequence ever attempted." Behind-the-scenes footage reveals the sheer scale of the undertaking as, firstly, the ship is erected inside an aircraft hangar. The writers admit there wasn't much point to the scene except to make things a bit "weird". The Tale Of Many Jacks sees how he went about doing this and talks to the techno geeks who made it happen with computer jiggery pokery. Depp had to strip the character down to several layers for a trippy scene where he confronts many versions of himself.

They kick back between takes for a short interview, although Depp does most of the talking, explaining that Pirates were "the rock 'n' roll stars of their era," whilst Richards struggles to draw his next breath. It's well known by now that Depp based his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow on aging rocker Keith Richards. However, industry watchers note that this is also $100m down on Dead Man's Chest.
